The Next Page: The Role of Music in Early Learning

WEBINAR: MUSIC & EARLY LEARNING

Watch the recording of our free webinar and learn about the essential role that music plays in a child’s development, and how anyone—from the self-proclaimed tone deaf to concert pianists—can use music to help young children develop healthily and happily.

One of the most common pieces of advice Reach Out and Read practitioners share with parents and caregivers is the evergreen refrain: read, sing and talk with your child!

As an organization, we have discussed many times the many benefits of and best practices for reading and talking with young children (it is in the name after all!), but sometimes the “singing” portion of this guidance doesn’t get all of the attention it merits.

With this installment of our Next Page webinar series, we have invited music therapist and educator, Jessica Lee, to help us all better understand why it is that music is such an effective and important tool for boosting the development of our youngest learners, and give practical guidance that anyone can use with the young children in their lives.

Jessica answers questions that so many of us have, such as:

  • What is it about music that is so appealing to young children?
  • How does music learning relate to other areas of learning?
  • How can I support my child or my patient’s development using music, even if I don’t have a musical background?

Jessica also discusses how music can play an important role in different domains of early childhood development, and will provide attendees with practical tools and tips tips they can implement with the young children in their own lives.

The presentation is followed by a Q&A session with Reach Out and Read Minnesota Medical Director, Dr. Gigi Chawla.

  • Jessica Lee is a board-certified Music Therapist working in an inpatient child/adolescent behavioral unit at a local hospital as well as the director of Ensemble Music which specializes in early childhood music and movement classes in the Twin Cities. She is the proud mom to 3 wonderful children and feels fortunate to be able to make music with families every day.

  • Gigi Chawla is Chief of General Pediatrics at Children's Minnesota as well as Medical Director for Reach Out and Read Minnesota. Throughout her career, Dr. Chawla has sought to better integrate behavioral health, developmental health and social services into children's primary care. She frequently appears in the media to provide health guidance to families.
